Expendables 3
Movie Tipper Rating: F
The first Expendables had a marvelous self deprecating humour that maybe even its creators weren’t aware of. It gave it a wham-bam, welcome back feel that audiences liked, laughed at, and even lapped up in home release. The second one (against all expectations) turned in a pretty decent comedy/violence popcorn experience; unfortunately this iteration simply grinds to a groaning halt. This time with Stallone producing snappy dialog like Q “Who sent you?” A. “Your hairdresser” surrounded by sequences of turgid violence. You have to wonder who they even thought the audience was supposed to be for this. Not kids, who don’t care about these guys, and certainly not old fans of the assembled fading actors who are bored by the TV pilot-level plot and sanitized dialog. I know, it’s a temptation because the first two were so cute (particularly the second one oddly enough). That’s why they keep making these sequels. Don’t give them your money it just encourages them. Besides whose ass did Kelsey Grammar ever kick? Seriously, who?

Sin City, A Dame to Kill For
Movie Tipper Rating: D
Unless you are a 20 year old man and feel that you must see Eva Green naked diving into a pool in rotoscope then you just don’t need to see this. In fact even if you are, you can see her doing infinitely sexier things by renting ‘300: Rise of an Empire’. Trust me on that. For the rest of us the glamor (such as it was) of the first installment over 9 years ago has diminished considerably. One critic compared the white cartoon blood spurts to bird excrement and really, that struck a chord. |
Rated: R (for strong brutal stylized violence throughout, sexual content, nudity, and brief drug use)

Sex Tape
Movie Tipper Rating: F
Take a premise that was never funny anyway (or even particularly possible) add the insufferably not funny Cameron Diaz and a strangely gaut and equally unfunny Jason Segal and you get this year’s certainty to sweep the Razzies. What a stinker.
Rated: R (though really there’s not much to see)
Metacritic Score: 36 (still too high probably)

Hercules
Movie Tipper Rating: C
Movie Tipper Rating: C
To be fair, this is a journeyman like B movie with a journeyman like B movie star and some pretty nifty CGI (and some more that is really not so much), everyone is doing their best (Ian McShane is certainly enjoying himself), but what a tedious enterprise it is. I don’t think it’s unfair to call Dwayne Johnson’s range … um … limited, but the flatness of this film isn’t really his fault. The plain dumb ‘stripping away the myth’ plot points of the first half will have The Rock’s prepubescent fanboys twitching in their seats with boredom. Then there is the splattery ‘Groundhog Day’ effect of being beaten about the head by flashbacks of the messy demise of our hero’s family truly over and over and over again (ok Brett we got it!). While the not-so-epic multiple clashes that follow are certainly visually fantastic (particularly in 3D) they coalesce into one very long numbing blur. Then there’s the blundering sloppy ending. At least you’ll feel a brief spasm of relief that you finally get there.
